Greater Lawrence Technical School (GLTS) Superintendent John Lavoie announced that Tia Gerber has started as the school's new Workforce Development Program Coordinator. Gerber previously spent nine years as Director of Community Partnership at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School. In her new role, she said her goal is to identify new and growing opportunities within GLTS programs for both students and community members.

The announcement also highlighted three components of GLTS's workforce development offerings: the After Dark Program, the Adult Technical Training Program and the Apprenticeship Program. Combined, the three programs are expected to train more than 450 students between October 2026 and August 2027.

The After Dark Program allows students from neighboring sending schools, who otherwise lack direct access to vocational education, to attend afternoon courses five days a week at GLTS and earn a vocational certification while completing their high school diploma. Courses are offered in Advanced Manufacturing, Automotive Services Technology, Health Assisting, HVAC/R, Information Technology, and Welding and Metal Fabrication.

The Adult Technical Training Program is open to Massachusetts residents 18 or older who are unemployed or underemployed and interested in working full time in their chosen field after completing the program. GLTS runs three sessions a year and offers 14 program options, including construction, welding, advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, electrical, HVAC and plumbing.

The Apprenticeship Program offers night courses in Electrical and Plumbing for people already working toward their trade licenses, helping them meet the requirements to take the Massachusetts State Journeyman examinations.

Residents interested in enrolling can visit the GLTS Workforce Development website or email the program at eveningedinfo@glts.net.

"I am thrilled to have begun my new role at GLTS, and I want to highlight the incredible team we have here," Gerber said. "My focus for the Workforce Development Program is to continue highlighting our wonderful programs that strive to expand the education of our students and community."
